A brass compass (made for the Spanish market) Which is a wonderful example of old German surveying technology and quality, Manufactured by F.W. Breithaupt & Sohn, Hessen Cassel which was described as the “world’s oldest precision instrument maker and the finest machine shop in Europe”. This compass was made for measuring geological azimuths and dip angle inclination of rocks. Compass and Dip angle silvered-scales are graduated with 1° over a range of 360° and 180° degrees respectively. Compass needle is locked with a screw rotation. Comes with push fit top in original leather pouch. Johann Christian Breithaupt, who was the Court Mechanic for the Duke of Hessen-Cassel, established the company in 1767. Friedrich, a 6th-generation Breithaupt instrument maker took over the company in 1932 and his son Hans-Hellmut is the CEO since 1962.
