This is an instrument to measure distances in miles, verstes or kilometers on maps and plans. Used for measuring length of roads, rivers, walls, etc. on maps. The device contains a handle and a tracing wheel and is calibrated by tracing the map scale to find the distance per one wheel rotation. Following the calibration one can measure distances in any units and convert inches to verstes and miles and centimeters to kilometers. The verste is an old distance unit used in Russia, equal to 1067 meters (about two thirds of a mile). The curimeter comes in its original box, and is marked depose HC it was made in France by the Unis Company. The original instructions are attached to the outside of the box. This curvimeter is the French predecessor of the chartometer.
