This is a small steel drill with brss fittings. It was used to make small deilcate holes. Reciprocating movement of the lower sliding grip, which spins the spiral worm of the shaft, operates the drill. The grip in this drill is beautifully made of brass. Archimedean Drills were invented in mid 19th century as listed in 1859 by the US Patent office for the invention of ‘Spiral Drill’ and in the English catalog of Marples from 1864. The drill is marked Eclipse No.1 Made in England. Overall length 11.5 cm (4.5 cm)
