This is a metal and wood drill. The wooden egg shaped chuck is 4 cm in length Length. It is decorated similarly as the 7 cm wood and metal handle. The handle has a hole in it for keeping the drill bits. The metall top rotates so the hole can be closed. Overall length including bit, is 28 cm. (11 inchs). Archimedean Drills were invented in mid 19th century as listed in 1859 by the US Patent office for the invention of ‘Spiral Drill’ and in the English catalog of Marples from 1864. Used to drill holes in fretwork and delicate woodwork by reciprocating movement of the lower wooden sliding grip, which spins the spiral worm of the shaft and operates the drill.
