This large, dual-purpose, Stereo Viewer is made of high quality walnut for use on the tabletop and it folds down to form a shallow box for storage. When assembled, it may be adjusted in height to give a range of different viewing angles. The base measures 15 ½ inch long x 8 ¾ inch wide, with hinged supports for the slide holder and viewing lenses board. The slide holder has a decorative fretwork on top, a frosted glass insert that allows for backlighting (for viewing tissue views or glass slides), and brass picture holders. The 1-¾ inch diameter stereo viewing lenses are mounted on a hinged frame, which can be locked upright for use or laid down for storage. When the stereo viewing lenses are laid down, a 5 ¼ inch diameter magnifying lens, mounted in a frame on long brass rods, can be locked in an up-right position to examine photographs in detail. Made in England, 1870.
