Early Binaural Stethoscope with Bowless Diaphragm Chest-piece. This simple Stethoscope signed ‘Five Point Britain’ is made of India rubber tubing (with some cracks) and chromed metal parts. The chest-piece is a single sided detachable disk shape leading the sound into a single tube. With the aid of a metal Y-splitter, the sound could be transmitted from a single tube into the binaural headpiece. The Bowler type disk is 3.8 cm (1.5 inch) in diameter and 1 cm (0.4 inch) high with an X Ray film diaphragm. Dr. David Littman was the first (in the 1960’s) to use a single tube connected to the chest-piece.
