A brass mid 19th century optometer for determining visual acuity. This is a subjective optometer in which the patient is instructed to move the target towards the lens from a position where it appears blurred until it becomes clear. The brass eyepiece includes a lens and a unique brass eye shield for the untested eye. The eyepiece is connected to a metal stem on which a small metal frame is a attached. A picture would be out into the frame which can be moved vertically on the stem until the patient sees the picture clearly. This is a unique optometer in very good condition. The steel handle has been replaced
