A silver plated inkstand with glass inkwell. The stand is oval in shape, stands on four decorative feet and has an ornate edge of leaves and scrolls. In front of the inkwell is a pen rest. The cut glass bubble shaped inkwell, has a silver plated hinged lid with small finial, and is fitted into a circular hole in the stand. The silver plating has a small wear as can be seen in the picture. The inkwell itself is in very good condition with no chips. The underside of the inkstand is marked JD & S, EP, a lamp (or is it a desk bell?) and the registration number 15711. James Deakin established his firm in 1865 on Matilda Street in Sheffield. By 1886 he was in partnership with his 3 sons and the name of the firm was changed to James Deakin & Sons. In 1888 they opened an office in London. In 1897 the firm was converted to James Deakin & Sons Ltd. The lamp symbol was used probably until 1898.
