German Horizontal Pocket Sundial With Folding Gnomon. This horizontal dial is made of turned brass body with threaded lid, 5.5 cm (2 ¼ inch) in diameter. The body contains a magnetic compass with printed and painted compass rose (N-O-S-W system) and a ‘Fleur-de-Lis’ symbol pointing north. The blued magnetic steel hand is mounted on a sharp pivot at the center of the body to permit free rotation in the horizontal plane. The compass is covered with glass and the ring dial chapter is placed on top of the cover glass. The hours are engraved on the ring in Roman numeral from 4 (IIII) am to 8 (VIII) pm and divided at 15 minutes intervals. The hinged gnomon angle is fixed probably for latitude of 52º. On top of the cover lid are engraved letters ‘I B, II B, WR’ and on the inside cover is a conventional 32 point compass rose reference.
