Ebony Handled Trocar by Arnold and Sons, London 19th Century

This is an ebony handled trocar with a silver cannula. The handle is shaped into an octagon, with a small round top. The cannula is signed 'Arnold & Sons' and 'Silver' The trocar was used to drain fluids collected in the body and was used until the invention of diuretics. The trocar, with the cannula pipe covering it, was plunged into the chest or abdomen. The trocar was then removed and the fluid drained through the cannula. This trocar comes in its original red velvet and silk, lined box. The inner lid is printed in gold 'Arnold & Sons Smithfield London'. Overall length of the case is 18 cm (7 inches).
