Apothecary Balance by Avery Ltd. with 20 Troy Weights.

The balance stands 46 cm high (18 inches). It consists of a brass scale with two pans suspended from the ends of a beam. One pan is used for the goods to be weighted, the other for the weights. Equilibrium of the loads is indicated by an exactly horizontal position of the beam. The whole is mounted on the main upright pole system with elevating lever. The main pole screws into a brass plate on the lid of the mahogany case. A drawer in the case contains 20 different gram weights ranging from 50 gms to 0.05. The beam is signed ‘W & T Avery Ltd Birmingham Class B’ on one side and ‘ W & T Avery Ltd Birmingham To weigh 2 Oz’ on the other. The pans are marked ‘W & T Avery Birmingham’ Case size: 29 X 16 cm (11.5 X 6 inches). Brothers William and Thomas Avery started their business in 1818 in Birmingham as ‘W & T Avery - Scale Makers’. In 1891 Avery was registered as a Public Limited Company – ‘Avery Ltd’.
