This is a brass early pencil sharpener. This sharpener shaves the wood and points the lead in two separate operations. The sharpener is marked on its back: AW Faber Tutior Juwel patent 4020 Foreign, and has the scale balance logo of the Faber company. The sharpener comes in its original leather case with snap.
The first lead pencil was produced by Kaspar Faber in 1761. Between the years 1784-1839, his son and grandson expanded the company in Nuremberg. The company was named AW Faber after Anton Wilhelm the son of Kaspar. The company was renamed Faber Castell around 1898 when Count Alexander zu Castell-Rudenhausen married into the family.
