A 19th Century Napier Pocket Folding Compass. This ornate instrument is the pillar type compass with brass faceted limbs and hinged joints to enable them to fold out and carried in a compact small case. It is made with hollow limbs into which the reversible heads are inserted. This arrangement may provide a combination of two pointed heads for use as dividers for marking off distances, or one pointed head and an ink or pencil head for use as a compass. Comes in its original silk and velvet-lined case 11 cm (4 ½ inch) long.
