French Coffee Grinder by Japy Freres & Cie

A standard size 0 coffee grinder, produced by Japy Freres & Cie of France. The box is varnished beech wood, wooden internal hopper, with metal hopper blades. The ground coffee is collected in a slide out drawer with a turned wooden knob. The handle is conected to the grinder via a decorative iron collar. Japy Freres was founded by Frederic Japy of Beaucount, born 1749 who first made movements for the clock industry at his factory in 1777, becoming the largest and most commercially important clockmaking concern in France. Japy Freres & Cie. supplied movements for some of France's greatest sculptures like Léon Messagé, Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis Beurdeley The business continued after his death. This grinder was manufactured at around 1920 It is 22 cm high 7 12 cm wide. There is one corner missing from the top of the grinder, though the breakage seems old.
