A 19th Century Unblemished Daguerreotype of a man in suit. Sixth-plate (2 ¾ x 3 ¼ inch) in a book-like case made of Papier-Mache in the early 1850’s. The outer case is decorated with hand-painted floral scene dainty inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The spine with elaborate gilt scrollwork and inscription 'Memento'. The interior is embossed with bookbinding tools and gilt designs. A red velvet pad is lined on the door facing the image and a hinged lock is attached on one side. This Daguerreotype photograph was made on a highly polished copper plate coated with silver; the image has a reflective, mirror-like appearance and is in near mint condition. The technical quality of the daguerreotype is very fine and above average for the period. The brass preserver around the image packet, and the oval mat (with sandy finish) are spotless.
