An ingenious device to sharpen hypodermic needles. The needle is attached to a protrusion on a wheel. The sharp end is now above the whet stone. In turning the lever below the whet stone two actions are set in motion: the whet stone starts rotating and the needle will moved in a timed sequence as to sharpen it from all sides. The needle is brought down on to the whet stone. After a few rotations of the stone the needle lifts, turns and returns to the whet stone for sharpening on the other side. The sharpener is marked Franz mfg co inc New Haven Conn. USA. Patent Pending. The patent for this device was sought in 1955 by Frederick Franz and given on January 28th 1958. The sharpener comes in its original fitted cardboard box. Also included is a later stand.
